Defeat hate, celebrate unity! That's the slogan of this Republic Day. As US-based filmmaker Rahul Dholakia releases Parzania on January 26, he gifts each viewer with a tri-coloured friendship band urging his message.
Parzania, an independent venture inspired by the heart-wrenching story of a Parsi couple who lost their son in the massacre that followed the Godhra riots in 2002, was cleared by the Censor Board in August, 2006, without any major cuts. But finding a distributor took a while.
For a director who debuted with the a commercial comedy, Kehta Hai Dil Baar Baar, this realistic, emotional drama has been a digression. And though Dholakia emphasises that he's made both films with equal passion, he's not denying the personal angle in his second offering. He was with the family on January 14, flying kites. One month later tragedy struck. And the smiling family-" my last image of them" - was shattered. "Why? Because they belonged to another religion? Because somebody else committed a crime somewhere else? What mattered most is that Gujarat, the family and my home state, is also Mahatma Gandhi's home state. It's a state that preaches non-violence and respects prohibition yet at the same time goes about murdering people openly and nobody reacts," says a distraught Dholakia.
